Knock Knock Women in Arts Exhibition Cairns

The Bag – Object or Obsession?

2nd annual exhibition in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Curator: Louisa Ennis-Thomas

Venue: c1907 Contemporary Artspace, Cairns

Showcasing works from 23 prominent and up-coming contemporary artists and makers from across Far North Queensland, both indigenous and non-indigenous women were invited to submit works responding to the exhibition proposal, ‘The bag: object or obsession?’

The bag is the quintessential accessory for women of all social and cultural backgrounds and ages. Its iconic status is derived from its long history of association with women and their participation within their communities. It is a tool, an accessory, a social device – both functional and symbolic.

Responding to the ‘the bag’ as a social and cultural vessel, participants were invited to either create an actual bag using their media of choice or to incorporate imagery exploring ‘the bag’ in ways more related to their current creative practice.

The show featured print-making, painting, sculpture, fibre craft, ceramic, installtion and photographic works … and of course, a multitude of interesting bags!

We would like to acknowledge participation by members of the Hopevale Arts & Cultural Centre and Saltwater Basketry Group in this event.
