ASSOCIATED COMMUNITY ARTS EVENTS:
Collaborative Book Project
Dates: August 2012 (various)
Venues: Cairns Regional Council Foyer, Cairns Central Shopping Centre, Just Kids Early Education House, Freshwater State School Library and the City Place footpath adjacent to the c1907 gallery.
Coordinator: Rose Rigley
9 local artists were invited to respond to the theme, A common thread. Participants were provided with a standard support and with a length of thread, which they were encouraged to include in their work or discard at will. The collection of resulting works formed a collaborative book.
This group project was devised to challenge the constraints of the traditional gallery space and to encourage greater access to and engagement with contemporary art within the community. Taking contemporary art to new audiences, the final book was displayed in a series of non-traditional exhibition spaces during the Cairns Festival.
In a commitment to community partnerships, the individual works which formed the artist book, were donated by participants to the Declan Crouch Fund. The book was auctioned on 19th October, 2012 at a fund-raising event in conjunction with the Dr Edward Coch Foundation. Funds raised are to aid the prevention of youth suicide in the local region.
This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
